Jonathan Swift was a satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer who became Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin.He is mostly remembered for his fantasy satire Gulliver's Travels, but also published a huge volume of work including A Modest Proposal, A Journal to Stella, Drapier's Letters, The Battle of the Books, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, and A Tale of a Tub.
Swift is regarded as the foremost prose satirist in the English language and published his work under pseudonyms—such as Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff, M.B. Drapier.
When Swift lived at Moor Park, he met Esther Johnson who was only eight years old. Swift became her tutor and and gave her the nickname "Stella" and he continued an ambiguous relationship with her for the rest of her life.
